There are lots of words to describe a 2D representation of how your Interior Design project will come to life. You might have heard of the terms mood board, vibe board, concept board, colour board, inspiration board, style board, stylescape and so on. At MORC Interiors, we like to use the terms “Style Boards” and “Mood Boards”. They are two very different presentations provided at two different stages in your design journey with us. Let us take a minute to expand on the difference between them.
Style Board
When we first meet, we will have a detailed discussion about your current / new property. We will start building a brief so that we know exactly how to present the results you have been dreaming of. We will ask you a range of questions such as:
- What is your favourite design style? If you don’t know the answer to this one, we will pull the answer out of you by exploring your likes and dislikes on visual platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram.
- What colours do you like or dislike? Dark and moody or light and bright?
- Do you have any existing furniture that we need to work with?
- Which contestants are you backing on “The Block”? etc.
Once we have a better understanding of the look you are going for, we can start building a “Style Board”. The style board will be a collection of imagery, with the intention of setting a style direction for your project. It will show you interiors that we want to take inspiration from, suggestions on furniture, fabrics, décor, colours and materials. It is a visual board built to strike an emotional response from you to set us up for the rest of the design process
Why do we do a Style board?
A style board is like a confirmation from you that we are aligned on your vision and preferences. Once we get this ticked off from you, we know how to proceed with the rest of the design process, and you will have confidence knowing that we understand your personal style and vision. This is a crucial part of the initial briefing process. Below, you will find an example of a Style Board where we have chosen inspiration images to present to our client.
Mood Board
Once we have presented the overall direction in which we wish to take your project, we get to work on the actual design of your project. We will do floor plans to ensure all furniture will fit appropriately, source all products and lay them out beautifully on a page just like in the image below.
Why do we do a Mood board?
The mood board allows our designer to see what works well together to ensure no errors are made upon delivery. This 2D design will be presented to you to help you understand how your furniture will look in your home. Our designer will lay everything out in such a way that it feels like you are looking straight into your future room. The exact specifications for furniture, decor and materials will be suggested in the board, leaving nothing to the imagination.
