DIY Wake Up Shower Melts Recipe (2024)

Start your morning off right with these wake up shower melts with a blend of essential oils to wake you up.

Mornings are rough, amiright? I've been using my Awake essential oil blend in my diffuser to get myself and my kids alert in the mornings. It works, but I've been trying to work from my office this summer to get some more work done.

Why is it that I can more done in an hour in my office than I do all day at home with my kids? But I digress...

DIY Wake Up Shower Melts Recipe (1)

So I made these wake up shower melts to use in the morning instead. They use a blend of essential oils that are said to help you wake up.

Steam baths have been used in many different cultures all over the world. Today, they are easy to do right at home with your shower.

If you're not a bath person, these shower melts, also called shower fizzies, work in a similar way. The hot water creates steam, and the melts give off essential oils as they dissolve to fill your shower with with aromatherapy vapors.

Think of them as a bath bomb for your shower.

For the dry ingredients, I used baking sodaDIY Wake Up Shower Melts Recipe (2), citric acidDIY Wake Up Shower Melts Recipe (3), and arrowroot powderDIY Wake Up Shower Melts Recipe (4). Baking soda and arrowroot are both inexpensive, so they are used for the bulk of the recipe.

Some people use cornstarch, and you can, too. I prefer arrowroot because it's not made from GMOs. Corn is usually genetically modified, so I prefer to use arrowroot for cornstarch.

Citric acid is what fizzes in the water. It will start to fizz as soon as you add the water to the dry ingredients. The fizziness (that's a word now) isn't necessary for the recipe. You can make this shower melt recipe without citric acid. Just use baking soda in place of the citric acid. You might need to add more water and let it dry longer.

Why Are My Shower Steamers Crumbling?

It's important to use the right amount of water. If you use too much water for these energizing shower steamers, they will crumble. Use just enough water so they hold their shape.

Let them dry completely. If they aren't dry, they will crumble when you unmold them.

If they do crumble, don't worry, you can still use them. Simply place some crumbles in a plastic bowl or cup. Add a sprinkle of water to activate them and set on the side of the shower floor.

Do You Need Citric Acid for Shower Steamers?

This wake up shower melts recipe does use citric acid, but you don't need it. Follow my recipe for bedtime shower steamers without citric acid and use the essential oils from these energizing shower steamers.

How Long Do Shower Steamers Last?

Once you activate these wake up shower melts, they will last about 5 to 10 minutes in the shower. The more water touches them, the quicker they will dissolve.

A shower bomb will last about 6 months on the shelf. After this, they should be safe to use as long as they haven't gotten damp, however the essential oils will start to fade.

Are Shower Steamers The Same as Bath Bombs?

These wake up shower melts are similar to a bath bomb, but there is a notable difference. Shower steamers have more essential oils than bath bombs.

Therefore, you should not use these energizing shower steamers as a bath bomb.

Where Should a Shower Steamer Be Placed in the Shower?

Your energizing shower steamers will start to dissolve as soon as water hits them. Get the shower melt wet with a little bit of water and place it at the far end of the shower away from the water.

It may only fizz for a few minutes, but it will create an aromatherapy spa.

Essential Oils

There are several essential oils that you can use to make these DIY wake up shower melts. Lemon essential oilDIY Wake Up Shower Melts Recipe (5) and other citrus essential oils can help increase serotonin levels in your brain to boost your mood.

Peppermint essential oilDIY Wake Up Shower Melts Recipe (6) can help you stay alert and better able to concentrate. Blends with these two essential oils would be great choices for this.

DIY Wake Up Shower Melts Recipe (7)

I used the Crafty Bubbles Awake essential oil blendfor my wake up shower melts, which has both peppermint and lemon along with several other oils that can help you wake up, so it's perfect for energizing shower steamers.

It's a blend of:

  • Peppermint
  • Spearmint
  • Lemon
  • Rosemary
  • Ginger
  • Clove
  • Grapefruit
  • Lemon eucalyptus
  • Tea tree
  • Sweet fennel
  • Myrhh
  • Tangerine

You could also use one of the following blends:

  • Rosemary, peppermint, marjoram
  • Grapefruit and basil
  • Orange and nutmeg
  • Black pepper and frankincense

You can also use a premade blend for energizing shower steamers.

I really like these blends:

Wake Up Shower Melts Mold

I used my Nerdy Nummies gemstone mold because it gives me just the right size shower melts.

You can use any mold, but I wouldn't use a large mold because the melt won't dissolve before you're done with your shower. I do recommend using a silicone mold because it makes it easier to unmold these.

These energizing shower steamers look similar to bath bombs, and they work like bath bombs, but they shouldn't be used as one. The recipe is almost the same as a bath bomb except these have more essential oils in them. You'll be using way too much essential oil with this recipe, so just use it for the shower where you're not soaking in it.

It will start expanding as it sits. Just keep pressing it down every 15 minutes or so for the first hour or two. I just pressed it down each time I walked by as I was cleaning the house. If it expands, it will still work. It just won't be as pretty.

To use your wake up shower melts, place run the shower fizzy under the water just to get it wet. Then set it in the corner of the shower where the water won't spray on it as much and let it fizz. It will slowly release the essential oils.

Be careful after using because it could make your tub slippery. Use common sense and a shower mat to avoid falls.
