A Rising Tide of Flu Cases on Long Island: Are We Headed for a Rough Season?
The latest data from Long Island paints a concerning picture, with lab-confirmed flu cases more than doubling in a week. This surge is a stark reminder that we might be facing a challenging influenza season ahead.
Dr. David Hirschwerk, the medical director of North Shore University Hospital, predicts a "significant climb" in flu cases in the coming days and weeks, especially after holiday gatherings. Dr. Eve Meltzer Krief, a pediatrician, emphasizes the seriousness of the flu for children, stating that last year, there were 280 influenza-associated pediatric flu deaths across the US, with 27 in New York State alone. Most of these children were not fully vaccinated, and almost half didn't have underlying health conditions that could have increased their vulnerability.
Dr. Krief highlights that getting the flu vaccine significantly reduces the risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and death, even in years when the vaccine may not be an exact match for the circulating strain.
