In a recent interview, Sen. Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona, didn't hold back when discussing Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's controversial summit with military leaders. Gallego, a veteran himself, described Hegseth's actions as a desperate attempt to assert power and gain political leverage.
"It's a clear case of overcompensation," Gallego stated. "Hegseth, a former Fox News personality, seems to be struggling with his new role."
But here's where it gets interesting: Gallego believes that Hegseth's grand meeting, which could have been efficiently handled via email, was an attempt to "show force." He added, "It's like he's trying to prove something, but it only makes him look weaker."
When pushed to elaborate, Gallego suggested that Hegseth's lack of expertise in defense matters might be the underlying issue. "Within the Department of Defense, he's seen as a joke. People think he's one of the worst Secretaries we've had."
And this is the part most people miss: multiple military leaders who attended the event agreed with Gallego's assessment. One defense official, speaking anonymously to Politico, described the affair as a "total waste of money" and a questionable test of loyalty or ideology.
The cost of this summit? Several million taxpayer dollars, according to estimates. Top military brass from around the globe were summoned to Quantico, Virginia, for a brief, hour-long event where Hegseth ranted about "fat generals" and declared an end to "ideological garbage."
