In a devastating blow to the team's prospects, Minnesota's basketball star Chansey Willis Jr. has been ruled out for the entire 2025-26 season due to a broken foot. This unfortunate news comes as the latest in a string of injury woes for the Minnesota Gopher Basketball team, leaving fans and coaches alike feeling the strain.
Niko Medved, the team's coach, confirmed the worst fears when he announced that Willis, the starting point guard, would be sidelined for the season. Willis had played in seven games, logging 187 minutes, before fate struck during a match against either San Francisco or Stanford. He was seen limping during the San Francisco game, but it's unclear if this was related to the foot injury. The injury became evident in the Stanford game, where Willis had to exit after just four minutes of play.
Willis, a transfer student from Central Michigan, had been a key player for the Gophers, averaging 6.3 points, 3 rebounds, 2.4 steals, and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 41% from the field. His absence will undoubtedly leave a significant void in the team's lineup.
Medved has turned to Langston Reynolds to fill the void left by Willis, partnering him with Isaac Asuma in the backcourt. With another ball handler, Max Gizzi, also out with a broken foot, the Gophers are facing a real crisis. But here's where it gets controversial: could Willis make a comeback with a medical redshirt?
Medved seems optimistic about Willis' future, stating, 'He should have no problem getting a medical [redshirt] and he is the type of guy I want back in this program.' He believes Willis will be cleared in the spring and even suggested that the injury might be a blessing in disguise for the player's long-term development.
The Gophers' woes are further compounded by other injuries in the team. Robert Vaihola's knee injury and BJ Omot's unspecified injury will require more time to heal. Fortunately, Jaylen Crocker-Johnson's ankle issue doesn't seem serious enough to keep him off the court.
