Ravichandran Ashwin has dropped a bombshell, stating the undeniable truth: India's batting prowess against spin has significantly diminished. This isn't just a casual observation; it's a stark reality check following India's unexpected collapse at Eden Gardens, where they lost to South Africa by 30 runs while chasing a modest target of 124. A result that, according to Ashwin, wouldn't have occurred in an era when Indian batsmen were masters of turning tracks.
Ashwin, speaking candidly on his YouTube channel, didn't mince words. He believes the current Indian batting lineup lacks the necessary technique and temperament to effectively counter high-quality spin bowling. He pointed out that in the past, players like Amol Muzumdar, Mithun Manhas (now the BCCI president), and even Sachin Tendulkar in his prime, would have ensured the game lasted much longer. He highlighted that only a few batsmen showed defensive solidity.
"When you don't play well, this is what happens", Ashwin said. He stressed a simple but crucial point: "If you want to play on turning tracks, then your game against spin has to be good; otherwise, don't play on such pitches as simple.”
Ashwin attributes India's struggles against spin to insufficient preparation. He frankly stated, "We are not the best players of spin going around in the world at this point in time. Most Western teams are better than India now because they come to India, they practice it a lot more, but we don't practice enough of it.”
But here's where it gets controversial... Ashwin also noted a peculiar shift: India has, paradoxically, become more adept at handling fast bowling in foreign conditions. “We are superior players of fast bowling in many other venues right now because we consider that as a challenge, but not this. That is the difference.”
South Africa's victory marked their first Test win in India since 2010, giving them a prime opportunity to secure the series as the second Test commences in Guwahati on November 22nd.
