Established in 1881, the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is located just 20 minutes from Manhattan by train and is a leading public polytechnic institution. NJIT has over 130 years of rich history and is a top national university.
With a student–teacher ratio of 17:1, NJIT is a world-class place to learn. It prepares future leaders for the technology-driven economy of today. NJIT offers over 125 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across its six professional schools and colleges. Its small class size makes it convenient for students to closely interact with faculty.
NJIT's brand new 45-acre campus accommodates new and improved facilities for students. The vibrant campus offers an opportunity for every student to be part of the multicultural community. It also offers students a chance to explore the large city of Newark, New Jersey along with several other places to visit.
Over 50 percent of freshmen students live on campus and enjoy the youthful atmosphere surrounding them. A number of support services are on offer for students studying at NJIT, including career development services where students gain exposure to different workplace cultures and career opportunities. MONEY Magazine also recently named the college to be among the nation's top ten for its excellent career services. NJIT alumni are found to be among the top ten per cent of high earners (mid-career salaries). In addition, according to payscale.com, NJIT ranks in the top one per cent of institutions for return on investment.
NJIT plays an active role in the job hunt for graduates, backed by an alumni network filled with success stories that remains well-connected to the institution. Ranked as the best university in the United States for upward mobility by Forbes, NJIT helps students progress to great heights with their NJIT degree behind them.
The university works hard to develop future leaders in their fields, and the active involvement of a Career Development Service in connecting with employers gives outstanding opportunities to students. As a result, the outcomes for graduates are endless and NJIT graduates have gone on to gain employment at countless blue-chip companies straight after finishing their studies. Amongst the companies to employ NJIT graduates are Amazon, Apple, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Forbes, Google, Goldman Sachs, IBM, Nokia, Morgan Stanley and many more.
The Career Development Service also run a number of employment events across the academic year, giving students the chance to network with top employers. One of the main highlights of the year is the spring employment fair which bring over 200 employers and 350 recruiters on campus to meet and chat with students and alumni.
NJIT Jumps into Top 100 for 2020 U.S. News College Rankings
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has risen nearly 50 places over the last two years, to be ranked 97th in America. NJIT has now joined the top 100 National Universities for 2020 in the annual U.S. News and World Report, assessing colleges and universities across the nation. Reflecting the institutions impressive teaching standards, staff have worked hard to improve the academic and social experience of students studying at NJIT.
The U.S. News and World Report decides its rankings based on a number of important different aspects, including outcomes, faculty resources, financial resources, student excellence, expert opinion and alumni giving. NJIT has seen impressive rises in student retention and graduation rates. Student applications have jumped from 4,300 in 2013 to more than 9,000 in 2019. This is in part down to the huge investments that have been made into teaching staff and research. In recent years, 150 new faculty members have been hired to facilitate more intimate class numbers of 20 or less to ensure optimum student – teacher contact time.
Over USD 170 million is spent annually on research activity at NJIT, granting New Jersey with an R1 rating in research by the Carnegie Classification. This is the highest possible rating.
Talking of the institution's success, NJIT President Joel Bloom, said "we now are rated R1 for research by the Carnegie Classification. Forbes ranks us 1st in the nation for the upward economic mobility of our students from the lowest brackets of family income. Payscale.com ranks NJIT #43 out of more than 4,000 universities for the mid-career earnings of our graduates."
For international students, finance can be a major concern. As a result, NJIT offers a number of funding opportunities including private loans and scholarships to lessen financial burden. Much of the financial aid provided to international students comes via scholarships or private loans.
Private agencies and lending institutions, such as banks, offer private loans, rather than them coming via the university or federal government. Any international student with an eligible U.S. citizen or permanent resident co-signer is able to apply for these.
NJIT does offer scholarship awards to lessen the need for further financial assistance. These include the International Presidential Scholarship, an award minus the out-of-state surcharge, which students must apply for with admission to be considered. There is also the Albert Dorman Honors College Scholarship. This is specifically for those who have gained admission to the Albert Dorman Honours College who may qualify for additional financial assistance.
NJIT has a range of entry requirements for international students, who are considered on the basis of their entire academic record with a particular focus on math, science and English grades.
Admission criteria:
Highest scores obtained on the SAT or ACT are considered by NJIT, using the ‘math + critical reading' composite, with an expected average of 1190 on the SAT. Those with scores below 1100 are advised to retake in a bid to raise their mark.
For international students who are not from a native-speaking English country, it is important to prove proficiency via a TOEFL test, with a minimum score of either 79 (internet-based test), 213 (computer-based test) or 550 (paper-based test). A minimum score of 6.0 on the IELTS score will also allow consideration for admission, and non-native speakers will also be required to take a placement test in English when they arrive on campus.
