These wedges can be served with a juicy barbecued hamburger or bratwurst sausage. A few other dishes to serve these with are homemade meatloaf, sunny side up eggs and toast or with sausage and peppers on top of chimichurri flank steak.

Be sure to cool wedges completely prior to storing them. Store leftovers in an airtight container or resealable storage bag in your refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freeze them in an airtight container or freezer storage bag for up to 3 months.

Do you have to soak sweet potatoes in water before air frying?

No! but you should rinse them. Rub any excess dirt off of the skin with your hands or use a vegetable brush so any grittiness gets removed prior to eating them. There is no need to soak them for a long period of time. It is all about getting the skin clean, so they are ready to be cooked.

If my cooking method is different, can I use another spice mixture?

Absolutely! The seasonings in this recipe go really well with the texture and flavor of the sweet potato. But honestly, many flavor profiles can be used in this recipe. It all really comes down to your personal taste. Whether it is spicy, sweet, acidic, or herbaceous, that is up to you.

FAQs

Why soak sweet potatoes before air frying? ›

If you'd like, you can soak the sweet potato slices for 30 minutes up to 2 hours before frying to remove excess starch. Personally, though, going through this step didn't make a real difference for my fries. Peels on or off — it's up to you!

Why are my sweet potatoes not crispy in air fryer? ›

If your air fryer fries are turning out soggy it is likely because you are over-crowding your air fryer basket or using too much oil. For the best results, use just ½ Tablespoon of oil per sweet potato and cook your fries in a single layer so that the air has room to circulate.

Why do my sweet potato fries turn out soggy in air fryer? ›

Banish Soggy Sweet Potato Fries.

If your air fryer fries are soggy, it is likely because you over-crowded them in the basket.

How much heat and time should you put a sweet potato in an air fryer? ›

Faster Than The Oven.

Sweet potatoes take 40 to 50 minutes to bake in the air fryer at 370 degrees F, compared to 50 to 65 minutes (or longer) in the oven (check out How to Bake a Sweet Potato). Use that time to whip up a fast, easy main like Pan Fried Chicken Breast.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before air frying? ›

I wouldn't bother doing potatoes from the raw state, without soaking. It will take about a half an hour and the texture won't be nearly as rewarding. They just don't get very crispy without that cold soak.

Why do sweet potatoes turn black in air fryer? ›

Why do my air fryer sweet potato fries turn black? Sweet potatoes contain a higher concentration of sugar than standard potatoes, and caramelize as they cook in the air fryer. If you find the fries are darkening too quickly or deeply, cook at a lower temperature, or for a shorter period of time.

Why aren't my potato wedges crispy? ›

Potatoes have a fair amount of starch in them which can give them a gummy texture. Soaking the potato wedges draws out the starch, making the finished product extra crispy. When you drain the water, you can visually see the potato starch that collected at the bottom of the bowl.

Why soak sweet potatoes in water? ›

What about soaking? Some recipes for homemade sweet potato fries ask you to soak the fries before cooking. The theory is that soaking draws out starch from inside the potatoes, helping them crisp up.

Why won t my sweet potato fries get crispy? ›

The secret to crispy (instead of soggy) sweet potato fries is to spread them out in an even layer with enough room so that they don't touch. This is especially important if you're making a big batch of fries. Instead of just piling more onto one baking pan, spread them out over two baking pans or cook them in batches.

Can you put tin foil in an air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Can dogs eat sweet potatoes? ›

Whether they're mashed, baked, or boiled, sweet potatoes are fine for dogs to eat as long as they're cooked, peeled, and plain. Again, avoid any seasonings or extra ingredients that may be included in “human food” recipes, such as butter, sugar, or salt.

Can you eat sweet potato skin? ›

You can eat sweet potato skin. It's a good source of fiber, a nutrient that may help lower the risk of heart disease and keep you feeling full for longer periods of time. The next time you make a sweet potato dish, whether it's a roasted side dish or a hearty, cozy casserole, leave the peel on.

Why do you need to soak sweet potatoes before cooking? ›

Some recipes for homemade sweet potato fries ask you to soak the fries before cooking. The theory is that soaking draws out starch from inside the potatoes, helping them crisp up.

Why is it important to soak potatoes before frying? ›

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes.

Why do soaking potatoes make them crispier? ›

It makes the water alkaline which helps break down the surface of the potato and helps make your potatoes crispy!

Why are my potatoes dry in the air fryer? ›

In theory, you can cook in the air fryer without using oil, but the resulting food could potentially be dry in texture. I like to use about a tablespoon of oil when cooking in the air fryer, so that these potatoes get nice and golden, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture.
